Nest in the Road

Now thankfully I didn't stumble across this nest.
It blended in quite well in the gravel.

4 eggs , oriented tip to center in the "scratch nest" in the middle of the gravel road.

My guess is a Killdeer nest.

Please add your speculation as to the id  of these speckled eggs.

  1. Those sure look like Killdeer eggs to me Chuck. They vary quite a bit in color but this nest is very typical of the Killdeer style and I would think that the parents should be nearby, this being, most likely, a complete clutch.

Both the male and female Killdeer incubate the eggs 24 - 26 days. The chicks leave the nest soon after hatching as they are born precocial, eyes open and covered with down. The parents usually take them to nearby water soon after hatching.

I wrote a post and took some photos of the little Killdeer chick here if you want to check it out.

I hope that road is not well traveled!
